Paul De Knop was rector at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel between 2008 and 2016. Shortly after his mandate, he was diagnosed with melanoma cancer. The university reported that he passed away on Thursday, August 4 from the effects of the disease. He was 67 years old and leaves behind a wife, four children and six grandchildren.
