Second division team Darmstadt 98 reached the second round of the DFB Cup with a win at FC Ingolstadt and thus gave coach Torsten Lieberknecht the perfect present on his 49th birthday.
The “Lilies” won the lower class Ingolstadt well deserved 3-0 (2-0). Phillip Tietz (15th minute) and Tobias Kempe (42nd, penalty kick) ensured clear conditions in front of 5,298 spectators at the break. Markus Warming (84th) put the lid on in the final phase. Ingolstadt, who played in the second division last season, seemed completely overwhelmed.
Chance after chance for Darmstadt
Lieberknecht’s team dominated the game from the start and created chance after chance. Fabian Schnellhardt (4th) and Matthias Bader (37th) hit the woodwork before the break, Tietz (50th) and Braydon Manu (55th) failed completely free-standing and from close range by FCI keeper Markus Ponath. The game was finally decided with the third Darmstadt goal shortly before the end.
The Ingolstadt team tried to play from a distance, but the balls usually got stuck on the first defender. It was 69 minutes before the “Schanzer” made their first dangerous action in the penalty area.
