DFB Cup: Stuttgarter Kickers dupe Greuther Fürth, VfL Wolfsburg wins

Also Dusseldorf further

Bundesliga relegated SpVgg Greuther Fürth made a fool of themselves again in the DFB Cup. The second division team, which was disappointing across the board, lost on Saturday at the Baden-Württemberg Oberliga club Stuttgarter Kickers with a deserved 0:2 (0:1) and was eliminated miserably in the first round. Last year, the Franconians, who are still waiting for their first competitive win in the new season, failed at the start of the cup as a first division club at the regional league club SV Babelsberg 03.

Defender Denis Zagaria gave Kickers a 1-0 lead in front of 7,280 spectators at the Gazi Stadium in Waldau in the eighth minute against the lethargic guests with an unstoppable header into the far corner. Substitute David Braig made everything clear shortly before the end after a counterattack (88th). While the hosts from the premier league were extremely aggressive and strong in tackles, Greuther Fürth showed far too little fighting spirit in the lost second division derby at 1. FC Nürnberg a week earlier. There was no sign of a difference of three leagues.

With new coach Niko Kovac, VfL Wolfsburg overcame the first hurdle in the DFB Cup at regional league club FC Carl Zeiss Jena with great difficulty. The Bundesliga club won 1-0 (0-0) on the Ernst-Abbe-Sportfeld construction site. In front of 6,100 spectators, the Lower Saxony only scored the winning goal in injury time through Omar Marmoush (90+3).

Kovac, who won the cup in 2018 with Eintracht Frankfurt and then in 2019 with FC Bayern, did without new captain Maximilian Arnold (back problems) and the ailing striker Max Kruse.

Fortuna Düsseldorf solves the task at Kickers Offenbach

As expected, Fortuna Düsseldorf has reached the second round of the DFB Cup. The second division won 4-1 (1-0) at fourth division Kickers Offenbach. The goals in front of 16,600 spectators at the Bieberer Berg were scored for the highly efficient Rhinelanders by former Bundesliga professional Daniel Ginczek (71st minute/79th), Andre Hoffmann (33rd) and Kristoffer Peterson (54th). Jakob Lemmer scored for the strong playing hosts (57th).
