Benjamin Henrichs (25) was almost gone, then Domenico Tedesco came to Leipzig. “You also have to be lucky,” said the full-back, summarizing the change of coach, which gave him a crucial role in the “Red Bulls” team again. Henrichs took the opportunity with six goals in the first eleven appearances. In these games, only Christopher Nkunku (24) had collected more points (twelve). “I’ve never had such a quota,” emphasized Henrichs in an interview with “Spox and goal” and summed it up: “That suggests that I understood from my head how to deal with the difficult phases in which many write you off and the public says you’re too bad.”
In April, Henrichs revealed how badly he had gotten off in Instagram posts in a “Sport Bild” interview. There he also expressed his now survived change ideas under Tedesco’s predecessor Jesse Marsch. He substantiated the significance of this epoch in his career even more drastically: “It was the hardest time of my career because I was really written off,” says Henrichs. “I went to training and I felt like I knew no matter how I trained, I wasn’t going to play at the weekend. If it then goes so far that players from outside the position are used in front of you in your usual position, then you question a lot.”

A look at the TM database shows how clearly the tide has turned under the new coach. In the ranking of the most successful coaching starts after 20 Bundesliga games – the German-Italian has now recorded that many with the Saxons – Tedesco is among the 40 new coaches with the most points in the history of the German upper house with 40 collected points. Since taking over, the team has made up a total of seven places in the table towards fourth place in the Champions League. Only Julian Nagelsmann (41 points) and Ralph Hasenhüttl (42) had a better result in Leipzig after 20 Bundesliga games.

Henrichs: With consistency “I think I’ll be there at the World Cup”
Henrichs, who was part of the German national team again in the last Nations League games, can count on his chances of winning the World Cup again with his development curve from last season. He puts “no focus” on it, as he reveals, but if he continues like this, it should be enough, he believes.
“Keyword consistency. That’s exactly what I need now,” said the Bocholter native. “That’s how I got back into the national team and not because I said that in interviews and Hansi Flick then said he read it and therefore nominated me. If I continue to show consistently good performances, I also believe that I will be at the World Cup in the end.”
