Purchase obligation with conditions
Julian Chabot (23) strengthens the central defense of 1. FC Köln, which has been severely depleted after a few departures. The Italian first division club UC Sampdoria announced the departure of the former U21 international, trained at Eintracht Frankfurt and RB Leipzig, to FC on Wednesday afternoon, Cologne followed suit a few minutes later. According to this, Cologne’s Chabot will be loaned out until 2023, after which the Bundesliga club has a purchase option that can become an obligation due to performance-related parameters.
The evening before, the “Bild” had reported on the agreement between the Rhinelanders and the Ligurians. Accordingly, the total package for Chabot is 2.8 million euros in line with market value, divided into 300,000 euros rental fee and 2.5 million euros purchase obligation.
“Every boy who, like me, grew up in Germany dreams of playing in the Bundesliga one day. That’s why I really wanted to take advantage of this opportunity and I’m looking forward to my new task in Cologne,” said Chabot in a press release from Cologne. In doing so, he followed up on words that he had found in a similar way in an interview with Transfermarkt in the summer. At that time, however, the native of Hanau decided to stay in Genoa.
Chabot continues: “The experience I have gained abroad over the past four and a half years will definitely help me. I’m grateful for this time, I want to take the next step at FC and prove myself in the Bundesliga.”

Chabot’s career: Via the Netherlands and Serie A to 1. FC Köln
After leaving U19 RB Leipzig, Chabot made his first professional steps in the Netherlands with Sparta Rotterdam and FC Groningen. There Sampdoria became aware of the 1.95 meter tall defender and signed him in 2019 for 3.7 million euros. Since then, Chabot has made 22 appearances in Genoa (one goal) and is tied until 2024, spending last season on loan at Serie A rivals Spezia Calcio. Chabot can expect more playing time in Cologne than with the Ligurians, where he has only been a regular since December. Before Jorge Meré (24; CF America), Rafael Czichos (31; Chicago Fire) left the club.
The person responsible for sport at FC, Dr. Jörg Jakobs said of the transfer: “Jeff is a robust central defender who, at 23, already has some experience abroad. With us he can now develop further in the Bundesliga and ensure the necessary competition in this position over the next year and a half.”
