The Ukrainian soccer record champions Dynamo Kyiv can dream of entering the group stage of the Champions League.
In the second leg of the second qualifying round, Dynamo advanced to the third round at Fenerbahce Istanbul on Wednesday evening with a 2-1 win after extra time. For Kyiv it was the first competitive game since the beginning of the Russian war of aggression in February.
Ukraine international Oleksandr Karavaev (114′) scored the decisive goal for Kyiv, who will be able to compete for a place in the play-offs from August 2nd. The first leg in Lodz, Poland, remained goalless.
Since the beginning of the war and the associated termination of the league, Kyiv had kept fit with a few test and benefit games – such as in April at Borussia Dortmund or about two weeks ago against Olympique Lyon.
The competitive game premiere is considered the beginning of the restart in Ukrainian football. The league is scheduled to restart on August 23 despite the ongoing war attacks.
