Pope Francis has expressed regret in Canada for his Roman Catholic Church’s dealings with children of the country’s original indigenous people. He also spoke of shame and pain at the role of the church in the abuses at the boarding schools where these children were placed. The Pope apologized for the behavior of Christians who had supported the “colonizing mentality” of the former Canadian governments.
