The goal remains relegation

At the official season opening of 1. FC Köln last weekend, Anthony Modeste was celebrated like no other professional from the ranks of coach Steffen Baumgart – despite his recently offensively formulated ideas about a change during the summer training camp in Donaueschingen. The future of the 34-year-old top scorer, whose contract in the cathedral city expires next summer, is still open – license player manager Thomas Kessler confirmed corresponding reports from “Express” at the beginning of the week, but announced that there was still no official offer for the striker to have received.

“Now I have to think about myself too. I only have one career, winning titles. (…) I am always honest and have a clear line. If something comes up, I have to talk to the club about it. But I don’t think that will be a problem, because I think that the top earners will have to leave. (…) So it won’t be a problem when I’m gone,” Modeste was quoted as saying in “Bild” at the beginning of July with a view to his future. Kessler confirmed his willingness to talk: “We promised Tony that if an offer came, we would discuss the situation together. So far, however, no one has approached us,” said the 36-year-old during a panel discussion at the “Rheinische Post“.

1. FC Köln: Kessler rules out further transfers in the summer of 2022

At the beginning of the year, the club and players had rejected a “very, very lucrative offer” from Saudi Arabia. Due to the losses suffered during the pandemic, Cologne had repeatedly promised financial losses and a salary cap for the squad. The association must “turn over every euro five times in all transactions that we make,” emphasized financial director Philipp Türoff recently. Against this background, Kessler also ruled out further transfers up to September 1: “On the access side, we are already through. We made sure that we also bring in players who can play two positions.”

As of now, the Domstadters have generated a slight minus of 580,000 euros in the current transfer summer with seven arrivals and six departures (for overview). Despite the successful previous season of Cologne, who qualified for the Conference League, the goal for the coming season is primarily to stay in the league: “We want to stay in the Bundesliga and get the 40 points as quickly as possible,” said Kessler.
