Mastercard introduced new fees for accepting cards for large online stores in Russia
Mastercard will set special rates for accepting cards for large online stores. A similar decision was previously made by Visa. Companies went for it after a dispute with Wildberries

The international payment system Mastercard, following Visa, has reduced fees for accepting cards for payment for large online stores, that is, for Ozon, Wildberries, AliExpress and others. From January 31, 2022, the amount of the interbank commission (or interchange) will be 1.48% or 1.28% of the value of the goods, depending on the volume of online sales. This is stated in the Mastercard newsletter, which the payment system sent out to acquiring banks. RBC got acquainted with the document, its authenticity was confirmed by two sources in the payment market.
A Mastercard representative told RBC that the company “updated the program of interbank commissions”, without specifying details.
Interchange is part of the total rate for accepting cards that the bank charges from the store, the so-called acquiring commission. The size of the interchange is set by the payment system, but it is the income of the bank that issued the buyer’s (issuer’s) card, and it is transferred by the seller’s bank (acquirer). In the acquiring commission, the share of interchange is approximately 70%. The average size of interchange in e-commerce ranges from 1.9 to 2.4%, the acquiring commission for large businesses is 2%, for medium businesses it is 2.4%. If the size of the interchange is higher than the acquiring, then this difference is paid by the bank serving the seller. He can compensate for his expenses at the expense of the cost of other services and products for the business.
According to one of RBC’s interlocutors, there were no such special tariffs for large online businesses before. Tariffs will apply when paying with Mastercard and Maestro cards on the store’s website. Mastercard’s letter does not specify how much turnover an online store must have in order for it to take advantage of the reduced commissions.
