The extra road from the PI Vught to the highway should be put into use at the beginning of 2024. This should put an end to the risky transports of detainees, who often still go straight through residential areas.
The new road will soon run from the prison, via a bridge to be built over the Drongelens canal to the Gementweg. From there there are several ways to reach the highways.
At the moment we still have to wait for the right permits, but as soon as they have been received, the construction of the road can start. It should then be put into use at the beginning of 2024.
Ten years
The municipality of Vught expects that two to three transports will take place over the route every week. This involves columns of three to five cars, possibly accompanied by a helicopter.
The road will remain in place for at least ten years, the municipality says in a letter to its residents. “Possibly a little longer, if security requires it.” The mayor and aldermen will submit the plan to the city council in September.
New main entrance
Ultimately, a definitive new road must be created, which must guarantee safer transport. This is stated in the area vision that the municipality has presented for the coming years. Ultimately, the PI must also have a parking garage and a new main entrance on the west side of the complex.
The prison in Vught has been in the news more often in recent years. Especially since Ridouan Taghi is locked up there. He is said to have already plotted a violent escape attempt. The airspace above the PI was recently closed due to threats.
