Video service blocks certain content for children

Hardly any app has been as hyped in recent years as TikTok. But not all videos on the portal are suitable for all users. That’s why TikTok introduces two new tools that influence the content displayed.

TikTok currently counts over a billion users worldwide. There is no denying that the video service is successful. A wide variety of users upload short clips on a wide variety of topics. But you don’t want to or should see all of them. That’s why TikTok is introducing new features like age lock to improve control over unwanted and inappropriate content. In the coming weeks, the service will also roll out the option of blacklisting words or hashtags yourself. The company has now announced this.

This will prevent videos tagged with those hashtags from appearing on the app home page (For You) and in the Following feed. Videos can already be marked as “Not interesting”. However, this only means that other videos created by the same user are skipped.

Another upcoming innovation is the age limit on TikTok: A new system is intended to classify content based on its suitability for a younger audience. If a video contains “adult or complex themes” and “fictional scenes that may be too scary or intense for younger audiences,” young people will not be able to watch the content. TikTok’s age lock blocks posts for under 18s.

TikTok users who are too young will then only see the message: “Post not available. This post has an age restriction.” According to TikTok, the age restriction has not yet been fully developed, but should nevertheless go into operation as “a first version” in the next few weeks.

Anyone who registers with TikTok must enter their date of birth. The minimum age for use is 13 years. If parents install the app on their smartphone themselves, they can mode Activate to follow their child on TikTok.
