A lot has happened to Bea Kristi aka Beabadoobee since her hit “Coffee” and the album FAKE IT FLOWERS: The now 21-year-old Londoner has played at festivals worldwide, was nominated for the BRIT Awards and is considered the voice of Gen-Z. Like basically all musicians, Covid also forced Beabadoobee to stay at home – and obviously led to great creativity spurts.
The love for melodic ’90s indie rock and pop has remained, but on BEATOPIA it now forms more of a backdrop for experimentation than repeating the sweet, yet fairly predictable, harmonies of earlier recordings. “Sunny Day”, for example, is as elegant as it is sensitive pop ballad, which could also have come from the Sugababes, while the easy-going “Broken CD” is reminiscent of retro-maniacal Britpop in the spirit of Sundays.
In more delicately instrumented pieces like “Ripples” or “Don’t Get The Deal” a folky West Coast mood can be identified, while the obvious hits “Talk” and “10:36” are based on 90s rock: It sounds great when piling up the guitars to veritable walls of fuzz. Bea Kristi’s close connection to her friends and fans, whom she addresses directly in the lyrics, speaks from all the songs, see/listen in the final track “You’re Here That’s The Thing”. BEATOPIA is the place of well-being for youth cheated of their youth by Covid.
