European foil champion Leonie Ebert sees German fencing on the right track after difficult years.

It is “important not to think in terms of limits,” the 22-year-old told “SID” before the start of the World Cup in Cairo on Friday. Her European title win showed “that we have the chance to win medals in important competitions.”

She now hopes “that things will continue in this positive direction,” said Ebert, and “that fencing in Germany will continue with strong medals in the future”. At the last World Cup three years ago, the German athletes went away empty-handed, as did the last two Olympic Games.

After her European Championship triumph in Antalya and winning bronze with the team, Ebert is the German Fechter-Bund (DFeB)’s greatest hope for a medal. Successful athletes such as the two-time individual European champion Max Hartung, the four-time individual world champion Peter Joppich or Beijing Olympic champion Benjamin Kleibrink had recently ended their careers.
