Andrew Fletcher, founding member of synth pop and rock band Depeche Mode, would have been 61 on July 8, 2022. He died unexpectedly on May 26, 2022. Not only MUSIKEXPRESS mourns the British musician (here is our obituary), but also the independent label Mute Records, which had a long-standing relationship with Fletcher. Label founder Daniel Miller is particularly amazed by Fletcher’s unique commitment: “Fletch was always the one who questioned the band’s success and asked how it could be done better. He wasn’t pessimistic, he just didn’t want the band and Mute to rest on their laurels. And his persistence in always striving for more has been a big part of Depeche Mode’s success.”
“We had so much fun”
For Miller, Fletcher was not only an excellent musician, but also a very good friend. Fletcher and Miller spent a lot of time together, especially during the pandemic. Fletcher was always interested in the label’s projects. “He was always stopping by to see how everyone was doing, to meet old friends and make new ones because Fletch loved making friends. As the gigs got bigger, he started doing more mute shows – we had so much fun doing it,” Miller recalled.
The story of the two is and remains unique: 42 years of business, creativity and friendship, including ups and downs. Fletcher’s optimism, determination and kindness will long be remembered by Miller.
