Europe also recommends second booster shot for people over 60: “No time to lose” | Coronavirus what you need to know

The European Commission, the European Medicines Agency (EMA) and the European health agency ECDC today recommended a second booster dose of the corona vaccine for all people over 60. In April it was already decided to offer a second booster shot to people over 80.

As Europe is currently facing a new wave of coronavirus, it is critical that public health authorities now make people aged between 60 and 79 and vulnerable people of all ages eligible for a second booster campaign, it said. It could be administered at least four months after the previous one.

“There is no time to lose,” said Stella Kyriakides, European Commissioner for Health and Food Safety. “I call on Member States to immediately set up a vaccination campaign for everyone over the age of 60 and I urge everyone to get vaccinated. This is how we protect ourselves, our loved ones and vulnerable populations.”

autumn booster

In Belgium, the health ministers have already decided to start a new vaccination campaign in September. This “autumn campaign” mainly targets people over 50 and healthcare staff, but anyone who wishes will be able to get a booster shot. The group of over-65s and people with a weakened immune system will receive a proactive invitation for an “autumn booster”. Healthcare staff in hospitals and primary care (GPs, pharmacists, home nurses) form the second priority group. Groups aged 50 to 64 are also invited.
