Until September 2021, the average price per kilowatt hour (kWh) was around € 0.22. No one has lived under a rock in the past year, so it comes as no surprise that the same kWh in 2022 should yield between € 0.50 and € 0.70. A quick calculation tells us that you can save at least twice as much money by turning off your freezer during your summer vacation – maybe even three times as much. Do we have your attention?
(Be) saving with and for ice cream
How much electricity your freezer consumes depends entirely on the energy label. For example, a freezer with label C consumes 173 kWh per year, which will cost you € 78. With F you will be more disappointed; 284 kWh and a less affordable price of € 128. Let’s assume for the sake of convenience that you will soon be going on holiday for two weeks and are very committed to the earth (and therefore have a refrigerator with energy label C in the kitchen), then save you: (rounded off) 7 kWh x € 0.50 to € 0.70 = € 3.50 to € 4.90 per trip. You get that 7 kWh by dividing 173 by 365 (days), and multiplying that by fourteen (two weeks). If you have made a slightly less green choice (feel free to say F), then you arrive at: (rounded off) 11 kWh x € 0.50 – € 0.70 = € 5.50 – € 7.70 per trip.
They’re not astronomical amounts, but you can pick up some artisanal stracciatella ice creams in a genuine Italian gelateria. Add to that the two-week winter sports holiday in the autumn and you just have a portion of Kaiserschmarren. Pure profit!
