Former Esdal school becomes shelter for Ukrainian refugees

The municipality of Emmen is going to realize 170 reception places for Ukrainian refugees in the former location of the Esdal College on the Angelsloërdijk in Emmen. The first ones can go there from October.

The building is currently still used to provide education to Ukrainian children aged 6 to 18 years. After the summer holidays, primary education will move to the Bargeres district and secondary education students will be taught at the Esdal Campus.

The cabinet recently instructed the 25 security regions in the Netherlands to increase the number of reception places and to take into account the reception of refugees until at least 1 March 2023.

Emmen must offer 490 emergency shelters for refugees from Ukraine as of 1 October. In addition to the former Fletcher Hotel, there will now be an extra reception location on the Angelsloërdijk. There is sufficient space at this location for the required additional reception areas. The costs for the adjustments to the building are reimbursed by the national government.

According to councilor Raymond Wanders, the situation in Ukraine is still dire. People still flee the country and leave everything behind to bring themselves and usually their families to safety. There is room for them at this location for at least one year, so that they do not have to move in the meantime and the children receive as much education as possible at the same school.”
