The World Athletics Championships begin next week. A German star will be missing due to injury.
World Cup out for the ex-world champion: The German javelin record holder Johannes Vetter has canceled his start at the World Championships in Eugene (July 15th to 24th). This was announced by the German Athletics Association (DLV) on Wednesday. Vetter (29) continues to suffer from a stubborn shoulder injury that caused him to miss the German Championships in Berlin in June.
“I will need the coming weeks to digest this decision,” Vetter wrote on Instagram: “It’s hard to say when I’ll be able to compete again.”
Lilly Kaden is also missing
In addition to Vetter, sprinter Lilly Kaden (Dortmund) will also miss the World Cup due to injury. The DLV did not provide any further information on the injury to the 20-year-old. Nine days before the start of the title fights in the USA, the German squad is shrinking from 79 to 77 athletes.
“I’m sorry for both athletes that they can’t be at the World Championships. I wish them a speedy recovery and hope that they can start competing again soon,” said DLV head national coach Annett Stein.
