Peize-Zuid step closer despite fierce criticism from the neighborhood

A new residential area in Peize-Zuid is a legal and financial risk, whereby the current residents will be the victims. At least, that’s what the residents think. Several residents shared their concerns during the city council meeting tonight.

The Noordenveld municipality wants to build a maximum of 150 homes on the south side of Peize. It concerns the area between Oostingslaan and Achteromweg in the village. The plans drew strong criticism from the neighborhood right from the start.

All speakers agreed this evening about involving local residents in the plans: too little has happened. “The participation of citizens is a beautiful fairy tale”, said Karin Weening, for example. “There have been no discussions leading to consensus.”

According to Roelof Vochteloo, communication with the Noordenveld municipality is a drama. “The Noordenveld municipality is always right,” he said ironically. Vechteloo says that the municipality of Noordenveld does not want to see that it is heading for a financial and legal problem. “It’s just a bad plan. We are not against the new construction, but we are against a residential area of this size in this place.”

Although a decision still has to be made next week, according to Vochteloo, the outcome has already been determined. “That’s a formality,” he says. During the election debate of RTV Drenthe, a majority of the city council was in favor of the construction of the new residential area.

“I have informally spoken to many councilors about the plan and the path towards it,” says Vochteloo. “Then it was indicated that it certainly did not all go well, but the plans are being continued.”

Peizenaar Jos Mastenbroek says he has the idea that opponents of the residential area are seen as ‘enemy of the municipality’. His main concern is the water problem. “The existing water problems are only getting worse with this residential area and the municipality does not guarantee that they will help me if I have water damage.”

The Noordenveld municipality thinks it has tackled these water problems. “Arcadis has done very extensive research into this,” says alderman Jos Darwinkel. “The water problem can be tackled and we will continue to monitor it.”

A majority of the council appears to be in favor of the new residential area. Frederik van Lookeren Campagne (D66) believes that the Noordenveld municipality can find a good solution to the water problem. “I myself live near the Oosterveld in Norg, where there has always been flooding. The problems were a thing of the past when the new district was built.”

The intention is that the Noordenveld city council will make a decision next week on the zoning plan for Peize-Zuid. The plan will be made available for public inspection in September.
