It’s been 13 years since “Avatar – Aufbruch nach Pandora” was released in cinemas. To date, the blockbuster is one of the most successful films of all time. With “Avatar 2” there is now a sequel – with a very prominent cast.
In 2009, James Cameron took us into a completely new world of cinema in his film “Avatar – Aufbruch nach Pandora”. The beautiful but also dangerous moon Pandora with its humanoid natives, the Na’vi, created impressive images. In addition to numerous awards, the film also grossed over 2.7 billion US dollars. Due to the enormous success, there were rumors of a sequel early on. In the meantime, “Avatar 2” has long been a thing of the past. TECHBOOK has collected all the information known so far about “Avatar: The Way of Water”.
When does Avatar 2 start?
Filming and post-production are now complete. In addition to a teaser trailer, there is already an official start date. “Avatar 2” entitled “Avatar: The Way of Water” will be released in cinemas on December 14, 2022. If everything had worked out as originally planned, the film would have been released in 2016. However, due to the corona pandemic and the technically extremely complex production, the start date has already been postponed several times in the past.
In the meantime, however, the production kept feeding us beautiful pictures and background information. And “Avatar 2” shouldn’t be the end of the series, by the way. Parts 3 to 5 also already have rough start dates. Part 3 could come as early as 2024, part 4 in 2026 and part 5 in 2028.
That’s what the “Avatar” sequel is all about
13 years have passed since the actions of the first part. Jake now lives with his tribe as Navi’i and has started a family with Neytiri. However, as more invaders from Earth arrive on Pandora, they are forced to leave their homeland. On the run, they come across the Metkayina water tribe, among others. However, they are not necessarily welcome there.

Great new images showing the moon Pandora and its denizens continue to emerge while you wait. For example, Empire Magazine recently published a photo series with exclusive material. Among other things, Kate Winslet can be seen for the first time in her role as tribal leader Ronal.

In addition to the remarkable images of the characters themselves, the world of “Avatar 2” is of course particularly exciting. The setting will again be the moon Pandora, which is one of 14 of the gas giant Plyphemus. Already in Part 1, the humans had their sights set on Pandora’s raw materials. Technical innovations in “Avatar 2”
Even the first part was technically extremely complex and a real feast for the eyes. “Avatar 2” should pack a decent shovel in this regard. Among other things, a 3D technology without the appropriate glasses is under discussion! Until now, this was only possible on much smaller screens than a cinema screen. In addition, James Cameron has worked with Dolby Cinema on an improved light projection that should make even more details in the image visible to the human eye.
As the title “Avatar: The Way of Water” suggests, water will play an important role. For example, water shots make up a large part of the film. The actors also had to face enormous challenges in this context. Kate Winslet, for example, learned what is known as free diving for her role in order to hold her breath for as long as possible. She is said to have endured it for more than seven minutes while filming under water.

For the underwater shoots, the “Avatar 2” team primarily uses so-called motion capture technology. The movement of the person is recorded from several measuring points on the body; a popular means of authentically depicting fantasy creatures in films and series. In the water, however, this technology is significantly limited. Rumor has it that Cameron and his team have been working on a technical solution for more than a year, which now probably includes, among other things, white balls on the water surface, which the changed light conditions in the water affect the technology. We are very excited about the result!

“Avatar 2” on streaming providers
Of course, there is still no official information on the streaming platform for “Avatar 2”. However, the producing studio 20th Century Fox now belongs to the Disney group and thus also the Avatar brand. We can therefore assume with great certainty that the blockbuster will be available on the in-house service Disney+ shortly before the cinema release. Disney may also do it like Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. The film landed on the platform within the regular subscription immediately after the international release date.
