German online retailers have also suffered from the ever-worsening consumer sentiment in recent months. As the Federal Association of E-Commerce and Mail Order Germany eV (Bevh) reported on Wednesday, citing a survey, online sales of goods in Germany in the second quarter of 2022 were 21.8 billion euros and thus 9.6 percent below the corresponding figure previous year’s level.

There were above-average losses in the clothing product category, with sales falling by 11.7 percent to 3.89 billion euros. Online sales of shoes fell by 8.9 percent to 1.12 billion euros. In the first half of the year, total e-commerce revenues in Germany fell short of the corresponding prior-year level by 1.3 percent.

The Bevh blamed the difficult framework conditions for the decline: “The consumer mood, which has cooled since the beginning of the war, also affects e-commerce in the first half of the year,” the industry organization conceded. However, sales “continue to be at a high level”.

Martin Groß-Albenhausen, Deputy General Manager of the Bevh, explained the current challenges: “As normal as e-commerce has become for people, it cannot escape the far-reaching disruption to the consumer climate, if not the economy as a whole,” he explained in a message. “Given the rising cost of living and energy, Germans are cutting back on goods and services they don’t need.”
