It was nothing with a World Cup victory to end your career: Kickboxer Marie Lang lost to Belgian Kelly Danioko in Munich. It was only the second defeat of her successful career.
That’s it for Marie Lang. The 35-year-old, who last defended her low kick world title in February, suffered a defeat in the 38th and last fight of her career. She only lost the second fight of her career against Belgian Kelly Danioko.
Surrounded by family and her best friends, Lange slept through the first two laps. That could no longer be made up against the strong Belgian, who had stepped in as an opponent at short notice. Danioko presented himself snappy and fast with his fists.
“Okay if I stop now”
“You wish for a different ending, but that’s sport,” said Lang’s coach Mladen Steko. And Lang himself took it relatively calmly: “I won’t let the defeat destroy what I’ve achieved in recent years. It’s okay for me now to say: Now I’ll stop.”
