This is how a solar power bank works

A solar power bank is an electronic device capable of converting solar energy into electricity, storing it in a battery and supplying it to other devices when needed. As Solaranlagen-Portal explains, the stored solar power can be used for all sorts of devices, either directly or to charge their batteries. In general, such power banks are used where there is otherwise no power supply, or by users whose hobbies include long trips, camping, hiking or other outdoor activities. Among the devices that can be charged using such a solar power bank are, for example, e-book readers, smartphones, notebooks, tablets, MP3 players, iPods, DSLR cameras and mobile speakers.

Since there are many different manufacturers in this market segment, who in turn have developed all sorts of different concepts and designs, there is a whole range of different models and types on offer. These include small, portable models that are ideal for charging smaller devices such as mobile phones, iPods and the like, as well as the fold-out models that can be placed on a vehicle dashboard and plugged into the cigarette lighter, for example, to charge the battery charge vehicle battery.

Those are the benefits

Solar power banks come with a number of benefits that make them a welcome alternative for some users. For example, these devices use photovoltaics, i.e. free solar energy, which makes solar power banks a significantly more climate-friendly option compared to conventional devices. According to the solar systems portal, the production of solar cells and batteries today, due to the practice of mass production, consumes significantly less energy, which can definitely be recovered through long-term use. Apart from that, solar power banks can also be used anywhere, for example when you are hiking, you can simply attach them to your backpack and then charge them while hiking. Another plus point is the compatibility: Any Micro-USB-enabled device can be charged with solar power banks.

Another advantage of the sun-powered power banks is that they are very compact and not very burdensome in terms of weight and size. This makes them an excellent choice for long journeys or trips into the countryside. Also worth mentioning is the backup charging system, which is of particular interest to people who care about being well prepared for potential disasters. In the event of a power failure, for example, the devices represent a small emergency power supply, since you can charge your electronic devices even though there are no other energy sources available.

How much does the environmentally friendly alternative cost?

Now, of course, the question still arises as to which area the climate-friendly power banks are priced in. According to Solaranlagen-Portal, the price of these devices depends on various factors such as battery capacity, solar panel technology and brand. The price ranges for solar power banks with capacities between 10,000 mAh and 20,000 mAh are between 20 and 30 euros. For higher capacities, over 200,000 mAh, prices depend heavily on the quality of the device in question.

When you get into the realm of really big capacities like 50,000 or 100,000 mAh, you start to run into trouble trying to find combinations that have the solar cells integrated, although there are also devices where the power bank and the solar panel are separate. Whether you can charge a specific electronic device with the respective power bank depends on the type of USB port. Most power banks have a universal USB output, but some have a micro USB or Type C charging port. It is therefore advisable to pay particular attention to the type of port when purchasing.
