For its part, The president of the European Commission has described the conversation with Sánchez as “important” and has reiterated the union of the EU “to support the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine”. “Constant exchanges with EU Member States and their allies are essential for preparedness and response,” he said in a message on Twitter.

The Prime Minister continued this Sunday with his contacts with international leaders to address the situation in Ukraine. Previously, Sánchez has had a telephone conversation with the general secretary of the NATO, Jens Stoltenberg, to whom he has conveyed his commitment to dialogue and his confidence that diplomacy “is the path to de-escalation”.

He has also reiterated Spain’s commitment to the Atlantic Alliance and the security of Europe, in addition to addressing the preparations for the next NATO Summit that Spain hosts in June, “a key event for the future of the Alliance”, the Executive has stressed. Pedro Sánchez is also expected to talk this afternoon with the Prime Minister of Latvia, Arturs Krisjanis Karins.

In this context, the Secretary General of NATO, Jens Stoltenberg, has conveyed his thanks to the President of the Spanish Government for the country’s “vital contribution” to the Atlantic Alliance on the crisis in Ukraine with the deployment of the ‘Blas de Lezo’ frigate.

“I have spoken with President Pedro Sánchez to prepare for the NATO summit in Madrid. I have thanked him for Spain’s vital contribution to NATO, the latest example being the deployment of the ‘Blas de Lezo’ frigate”, Stoltenberg has made known on his Twitter account.

For its part, Sánchez has indicated that in the conversation he has reiterated to Stoltenberg that Spain is “committed to NATO and the security of Europe”.

“We support the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine and we trust that diplomacy and dialogue will be the way of de-escalation in this crisis,” the president added in a message on social networks.
