– Not annoying at all, even though I didn’t score right in the first match. Two feed points warm the heart.

That’s the mood Teemu Selänne On the home page of Iltalehti’s sports department on October 7, 1992.

The Winnipeg Jets had hit the Detroit Red Wings 4-1 on Selänen’s NHL debut.

– We just wanted to win more.

Pitch

In Finland, Selänte’s first NHL season was closely followed. During his debut, Iltalehti published a 30-page podcast supplement, the top content of which was from a recently retired puck editor. Pekka Jalosen reports from Winnipeg.

– Winnipeg has been a positive surprise for me, Selänne commented.

– I like being here.

In the appendix, Selänne presented his house, which cost 130 Canadian dollars.

– The downstairs will be my own place to bump. In the living room I get a big screen on which TV shows and videos are projected. I will build a sauna in one empty room.

There was also talk of a puck.

– I know the coach John Paddockin waiting for goals from me. Only after the first season is it allowed to wait for big screens.

“I remember this for a long time”

The first NHL goal came in the opening round of the second match as a guest for the San Jose Sharks.

– First paint always tastes sweet at any level, Selänne explained.

– I will remember this for a long time, even if others do not remember.

Sharks won 4-3 on extra time.

– This can no longer be called hockey when the trough is so small. A team like San Jose has no chance at our home arena where the trough is bigger.

20 points October

Your back didn’t need a familiarization period, not even a month. The Jets played 11 matches in October, of which only Selänne missed points.

– I think I’ve played steadily for sure, he estimates.

– There have been no bad games.

The balance for the opening month was 20 (11 + 9) power points.

Against Calgary Flames, your back kneaded five (2 + 3) points, but the Jets lost 5-7.

– Our field made all our goals. We are relying too much on one field.

“Terrible hunger”

Your back rose to the top of the paint and points exchange right from the autumn. In both January and March, he scored 27 points, but the fastest pace was at the end of the regular season: seven games, 14 (5 + 9) points.

The newcomers ’goal record was broken on March 2nd. Your back made a hat for the Quebec Nordiques network and celebrated a record hit with the famous glove in the air.

– This was a dream come true, Selänne described.

– My hunger for paint has been so terrible lately that I have never experienced anything like it.

When the regular season ended, Selänte’s balance was dumbfounding and a newcomer: 84 matches, 132 (76 + 56) points.

Your back was a point exchange viton and shared the paint kingdom Alex Mogilnyn with.

– Two people became happy. We both played an awesome season and now we’re both left in history.

To a hiding place?

Even in the playoffs, Selänne still reached the point-per-game pace, but missed three points in six matches.

The Vancouver Canucks, who won the Smythe Division, swept the Jets 4-2 in the opening round.

Iltalehti was facing Selänne at Helsinki-Vantaa.

– I’m just bored, Selänne announced.

– There’s probably enough of a spark, but I’m going to take a break from the summer. A suitable hiding place is sure to be found.

The newspaper clippings and Selänte’s quotes are from Iltalehti’s articles from the period 1992–93.
