The 22-year-old center defender Sven Botman from Badhoevedorp will start working for the wealthy English club Newcastle United from this summer. That reports The Telegraph this evening. Botman will soon move from Lille to Newcastle, after an agreement on the transfer fee of 38 million euros fixed and 2 million euros in bonuses. The transfer is also well received by Ajax; the club negotiated a resale percentage of ten percent in 2020 and this time will cash out another 2.9 million euros.
At Ajax, Botman never made minutes in the first team. SC Heerenveen did hire him after many appearances for Jong Ajax. OSC Lille then took him over from Ajax after a good season in Friesland. In total, Botman played 79 games for the Northern French in these two years and won Ligue 1 in 2021.
Due to the transfer to Newcastle United, he is now – after Virgil van Dijk, Matthijs de Ligt and Nathan Aké – the fourth most expensive defender ever.
On Monday, Botman will travel to Newcastle for his inspection, where the defender will have to prove himself.
