Fake news about Belgium: Chinese state newspaper sells union demonstration in Brussels in protest against NATO | Abroad

The state newspaper shares a video on Twitter showing demonstrators in Brussels. “Tens of thousands of protesters gathered in Brussels on June 20. They chanted ‘Stop NATO’,” the video reads. In reality, it is not a protest against NATO at all, but a trade union demonstration. So fake news. The video has been viewed more than 1.1 million times.

Chinese President Xi Jinping has previously spoken out against “any expansion of NATO”. It became clear that China is supporting Russia in its dispute with Ukraine and the West. China also supports all Russian security demands it has made to the West.

China is known for spreading misinformation. Media such as BBC or CNN were even banned for a long time. Shielding correct information is part of the doctrine in China. Earlier this week, the European Commission published even stricter rules for tech companies. Google, Facebook and Twitter run the risk of receiving hefty fines in the European Union if they do too little against the spread of disinformation.
