250 injured cyclists a year in Flanders due to the car door swinging open | Inland

In Flanders, about 250 accidents take place every year in which a cyclist collides with an opening car door, resulting in injuries. The Vias traffic institute suspects that the number of injured people is actually higher. It is a common problem, especially in the urban environment. Cyclists often have to cycle on the road alongside parked cars. In Brussels, French doors are even the main cause of bicycle accidents.

Vias advises both drivers and passengers to take extra care when opening the car door after parking. A good tip is the so-called ‘Dutch Reach’, where the car driver opens the door with the right hand. That way you automatically look over your shoulder.
