The Governing Mayor Franziska Giffey and her colleagues gave the go-ahead for the preparations for the World Games in Berlin.

“We are the capital of inclusion,” says SPD politician Iris Spranger (61). The qualifications for the national Special Olympics are currently underway. It’s not about higher, faster, further, but about respect for people with intellectual disabilities.

In exactly one year (June 17th to 25th), Berlin will be sizzling: 7,000 athletes, 3,000 coaches, 20,000 volunteers, 9,000 family members – and 300,000 spectators.
After the opening ceremony in the Olympic Stadium, the 26 types of sport are distributed throughout the city: from the canoe open water in Grünau, to cycling competitions on the Straße des 17. Juni, to athletics in the Hans Braun Stadium (Olympic Park). Because the new building in the Jahn-Sportpark (Prenzlauer Berg) was slowed down.

The games are much more than competitions. There is a health program with a lot of advice. Sports politician Spranger was impressed by the eye tests. Not with decreasing numbers, but circles, cubes, apples. “Because if you don’t understand the numbers, you end up with the wrong glasses,” says the politician.
The funding for the major event is already in place: Berlin and the federal government are contributing 71.6 million euros. “They are comparable to the Olympic Games in terms of their complexity,” says Senator for Building Andreas Geisel (56), who attended the last Games in Abu Dhabi.
