A referee has died in El Salvadorafter being attacked on the pitch. The trigger is said to have been a yellow card. When the alleged perpetrator was arrested, there was a surprise for the police.
A soccer player in El Salvador attacked the referee last weekend after being warned. According to a report by “Diario El Salvador”, he is said to have hit him so badly that the referee later succumbed to his injuries. Now there was an arrest.
José Arnoldo Amaya was refereeing a game at a tournament in Toluca in San Salvador when he showed a player a yellow card just before the end of the game. He is said to have hit the 63-year-old and was then sent off. The player then apparently freaked out and started punching the man again. According to the reports, he did not let go when the victim was already on the ground.
The referee was taken to hospital with serious injuries, where he died. His son told the Diaro El Salvador newspaper: “I found out about it through a phone call. The police didn’t even tell me who his attacker was.” But now there was a breakthrough in the investigation.
