More than 150,000 children and young people in the capital live in families who receive Hartz IV. The CDU takes on the issue of child poverty at its small party conference on Wednesday.

“There are many good suggestions on the table in Berlin to give disadvantaged children better support and get them out of poverty. But red-green-red has an implementation problem,” said CDU country chief Kai Wegner (49) to the BZ

Union proposal: families should be able to book membership in sports clubs or lessons at music schools for their children via an app using the “Chancen Pass”. There’s a flat rate of 50 euros for this, and you don’t have to apply to the office. “I want parents to be able to book the services for their children with one click,” says Wegner. What the CDU also proposes:

Expansion of daycare places. Train educators to offer more language support.

School enrollment examinations must remain with health authorities in order to ensure comparability.

Reintroduction of pre-school classes to reduce language deficits.

More social pedagogues and social workers to relieve teachers at troubled schools.

Special discounts for large families.
