PSV confirms purchase option
Central defender Timo Baumgartl will also be active for Union Berlin in the Bundesliga next season. The “Iron” are loaning the 26-year-old from PSV Eindhoven for another season. According to the Dutch, a purchase option was agreed. Defensive man Baumgartl could not play in the season finale. He was diagnosed with testicular cancer and successfully had a tumor removed.
Before the 3-2 win against VfL Bochum, his team-mates had warmed up in T-shirts with the number 25 – Baumgartl’s shirt number. He has played in 34 games for the Köpenickers since the start of the season and increased his market value by 2 million to 5 million euros – the first plus since December 2018. Baumgartl’s contract with Eredivisie club PSV runs until 2024.
Baumgartl felt comfortable at Union Berlin from the start
Baumgartl, whose whereabouts Union managing director Oliver Ruhnert had already announced weeks ago, but then initially backed down, said: “I felt very comfortable with Union from the start and not only the club and its people, but also the city closed to the heart. I’m looking forward to more time together and will try to get back on the pitch as soon as possible.”

Ruhnert himself explained: “In his first season Timo showed how important he is for our defence. That’s why the extension of the loan makes sense for us from a football point of view. In addition, we want to give Timo the best possible support on his way and are confident that he will make a full recovery.”
