US sports retailer Lids expands to Germany

The US sports retailer Lids expands to Germany and opens several stores in Berlin.

The first location is scheduled to open on June 17 in the Alexa Berlin shopping center, Lids announced on Tuesday. The next store is scheduled to open its doors on June 24th in the Mall of Berlin. In addition, an opening in Eastgate Berlin is planned for the beginning of July.

Germany: 20 stores in 2022

However, the three stores in Berlin are only the starting signal for a wave of openings across Germany. A total of 20 stores are scheduled to open this year, including in cities such as Bremen, Dresden and Hamburg.

The Indianapolis-based company places a strong focus on peaked caps and clothing from US sports in its range. It offers products from the major US teams and leagues. Brands such as Nike, New Era and Oakley also find their place in the range.

“Over the years we have repeatedly received requests to bring our unique range to Germany. Germany has a huge market for caps and headwear, but nothing like this has existed here before. We at Lids can’t wait to get started,” said Lids President Britten Maughan. “Germany has a strong market for fashion accessories and a growing affinity for US sports, which aligns very well with the core strengths of the Lids product offering.”

In the German market, the US company meets the Cologne streetwear retailer Snipes, which is currently on a global expansion course and has already further expanded its branch network in the USA with the takeover of Jimmy Jazz and Expressions.

Lids Sports Group operates nearly 1,200 stores in the US, Canada, Puerto Rico, Mexico and London. The company entered the European market for the first time last year with Great Britain. The company has a retail partnership with Macy’s and operates the flagships of the US ice hockey and US basketball leagues – NHL and NBA. The Lids Sports Group includes the stores Lids, Locker Room by Lids, Fanzz, Yankees Clubhouse Shops, Dodgers Clubhouse, Cardinals Clubhouse.
