At a factory site in Shevyerodonetsk, the future of the Donbas is decided: “If we don’t receive heavy weapons soon, we are lost” | Abroad

If there is one place in Ukraine whose name you can shamelessly misspell, it is Shevyerodonetsk. Because the Ukrainians themselves have debated for half a century about what that city is actually called. When it was founded in 1934, it was Lyschimstroy. And the decree changing the name in 1950 was drafted in Russian, making it Severodonetsk. In Ukrainian, Sivjerskodonetsk, Sivjerodonetsk, Sheverodonetsk, and Shevyerodonetsk were used — until parliament decided in 2008 that it should be Shevyerodonetsk.
