models, features, prices in comparison

Italians love SUVs: mini, city, compact, medium and large, economical, sporty or luxury, Sport Utility Vehicles are still among the best-selling cars in our country

For several years now, those who say cars have been saying SUVs: this type of bodywork, in fact, now punctually represents between 30% and 40% of car sales, competing every month with sedans and alternating with them on the top step of the podium. .

For this reason, for years now the car manufacturers have rationalized their production in order to be able to offer customers on the market an increasing number of SUVs, of all segments: there are small SUVs (also called “city SUVs” or ” mini SUVs “) covering the lower part of the market, compact SUVs, slightly larger in size but still suitable for the city, medium SUVs and large SUVs which, on the other hand, are already more oriented towards comfortable journeys in the suburbs and on the motorway .

Exactly as it happens for sedans, also for SUVs (which are almost always “high-wheeled” sedans) it is often difficult to frame the “segment” of the market: there are officially “compact” Sport utility vehicles but whose dimensions and whose outfitting until a few years ago were from a decidedly higher segment. Any kind of distinction between categories, therefore, can only be arbitrary also because it is the car manufacturers that, in fact, have made their offer more and more fluid with an ever greater quantity of products that are difficult to fit into a single category.

However, today there is a positive result: all those who are looking for an SUV will find (at least) one that suits their needs, their tastes and their wallet.

SMALL SUVS: WHAT THE MARKET OFFERS

The lower part of the SUV market is covered by “mini SUVs” or “city SUVs”, that is, cheap and small SUVs that are good for getting around the city, are easy to park and don’t cost much. In principle, but with the limits already described, we could consider in this category the SUVs of segment A and B up to about 4.10-4.15 meters of length.

The typical engine of these cars, the most common configuration, is the mille petrol three-cylinder with powers of 60-100 horsepower (something more if it is turbo) which is just fine for city use.

In this segment of the market, if we look at the prices we find a bit of everything: fairly expensive cars, like the Audi A1 Citycarver, but also decidedly economical cars like the Dacia Sandero Stepway. In between, several models with more or less high prices: from the very popular Fiat Panda Cross to the equally popular Ford Ecosport. But also the first experiments of 100% electric City SUVs, such as the Dacia Spring.

  • Audi A1 Citycarver starting from 25,150 euros
  • Opel Mokka starting from € 22,980.00
  • Seat Arona starting from 19,800.00 euros

  • Hyundai Bayon starting from 19,850.00 euros

COMPACT SUV: WHAT THE MARKET OFFERS

Going up in size and price, we find the compact SUVs even more loved by Italians, a market segment where competition is fierce and the offer of models and equipment is immense. Sport Utilities of this size are those that most resemble the saloon of derivation and, for this reason, the term “crossover” is often used for these cars, ie a mix of two genres. Once again, however, the definitions are narrow and these cars, by and large, have a length between 420 and 440 centimeters.

In this market segment we find more choice of engines, with some diesel engines and several hybrids (even plug-ins), but the prices go up as the size and these cars make sense for those who need to move out of town and ask the comfort allowed by a larger car.

MEDIUM SUV: WHAT THE MARKET OFFERS

Moving on to medium SUVs, you enter a clearly superior category and you can feel the leap in quality, even a lot, especially for reasons of available space. We are talking about cars with a length of between 430-440 and 450-460cmtherefore of dimensions that begin to be important and that, thanks to the very high sky, become extremely comfortable even on longer journeys.

On the other hand, with lengths around four and a half meters, medium SUVs begin to be uncomfortable to drive, and above all to park, in historic centers and in the narrowest streets. In fact, it is outside the city that these Sport Utility Vehicles give their best, also thanks to increasingly powerful engines: whether they are petrol, diesel or hybrids of any technology, or even 100% electric, often the engines of these SUVs reach and exceed 150 horses and almost always on these cars we find, sometimes even in the basic equipment, automatic transmissions and refined driver assistance technologies.

Once again, it is difficult to draw precise boundaries between one category and another also because in the large family of medium SUVs we find few truly cheap SUVs and more and more premium SUVs, with equipment that was once exclusive to many other market segments. Prices, for this, start at around 16 thousand euros for a Dacia Jogger from 454 cm LPG from 100 horsepower to over 70 thousand euros that a Land Rover Evoque can cost from 437 centimetersbut with a two thousand 300 horsepower turbo engine.

LARGE SUVS: WHAT THE MARKET OFFERS

Large SUVs are the cars that probably offer the most space and comfort today among all those on the market and, at the same time, are also the least agile in the city. In fact, we are talking about cars over 460 centimeters in length, some even over 5 meters. On the other hand, many of these cars also have the option of the third row of seats and, consequently, are homologated for up to 7 seats.

Clearly, large SUVs are the ideal cars for long journeys on the motorway, which spend in the highest possible comfort and, often, even in luxury. They are also very expensive cars, especially the electric ones with large batteries like the Audi e-tron and those with true sports engines, like the Aston Martin DBX with the 551 horsepower V8. Those looking for a great SUV that is cheap, therefore, will have to surrender to the fact that there is no great economic SUV in the literal sense of the term.
