‘Criticism of quiz is not justified’

Angela de Jong wonders whether Matthijs van Nieuwkerk would do well to present all kinds of TV quizzes such as The Connection, because he would make himself interchangeable with them. Where De Wereld Draait Door really couldn’t go on without Matthijs, The Connection can be presented by every TV idiot, Angela wants to say.

redeemable

That criticism is unjustified, according to format developer Kirsten-Jan van Nieuwenhuijzen. He was involved in the development of The Connection. “Of course there was some criticism of The Connection and Matthijs, including by Angela de Jong, in which she said: ‘That’s really not for Matthijs, because quiz masters are interchangeable.’ I tend to disagree.”

He continues in his podcast Content Wars: “A good presenter, a good quiz presenter; that’s really hard. People always think it’s very easy to present a quiz, but it’s not.”

stature

According to Kirsten-Jan, it is not at all surprising that someone of Matthijs’ stature presents such a quiz. “Look, Matthijs has many interests. He also likes to do a music quiz, which he has been doing for a long time. He likes quizzes, also just a quiz à la The Connection, so he really likes doing that on the side.”

Kirsten-Jan thinks it’s strange that some people don’t accept that. “He also makes POP22. He does all that very well, but indeed: people are used to Matthijs doing a kind of talk show-like thing, but in England it is very normal for great presenters to do different things.”

loose way

Kirsten-Jan thinks we should get used to that in the Netherlands. “We in the Netherlands find that a bit more difficult, but Matthijs just really enjoys doing it and I think he does it very well too. Delicious in its own way. He also understands how it works. It seems a lot easier than it is to present a quiz.”

What does he think is the flop quiz of the moment? The Sander Lantinga show Vier Is Too Much on SBS 6. “That’s not going to be him. I already know that. That format is too weak.”
