Apple’s next major update for its iOS mobile operating system won’t come until autumn 2022, but owners of some iPhone models should be prepared to get nothing.
At WWDC 2022, Apple officially presented its next major update to iOS 16. The new firmware brings numerous new functions to iPhones and iPads. All the better that Apple is providing the majority of its devices with the update with the launch of iOS 16 in September. However, there are also models that do not meet the minimum requirements of iOS 16 and are therefore left empty-handed. And that also applies to models that you probably didn’t expect.
These iPhones will no longer get iOS 16
While iOS 15 is still available for all devices that also support iOS 14, and therefore no iPhones have been removed from the update list, things are different with iOS 16. Due to the extensive innovations and the resulting increased demands on the hardware, Apple is already cutting back on devices that could always hope for an update. According to Apple, five iPhone models will no longer receive the update to iOS 16:
- iPhone 6s
- iPhone 6sPlus
- iPhone SE (2016)
- iPhone 7
- iPhone 7Plus
Users must therefore have at least an iPhone 8 in order to be able to install Apple’s latest operating system. That sounds harsh in view of the availability of the updates so far, but it really isn’t. Because the iPhone 8 came onto the market in 2018 and is therefore already five years old. The delisted models are even more years old – many expected Apple to weed them out in earlier update cycles.

iPads also get nothing
There are also iPad models that no longer get the update to iPadOS 16 – the iPad Air 2 and the iPad Mini 4. The discarded models date back to 2014 and 2015, so they are even older than the iPhones.
Update release to iOS 16 or iPadOS 16
Typically, Apple introduces its latest operating system together with the new iPhone generation. It won’t be any different this year, so we’ll see iOS 16 alongside the iPhone 14. The big keynote usually takes place on a Tuesday in September. A possible date would therefore be September 6th or 13th.
