A 23-year-old woman died on Friday in a serious accident on the A15 at the Gorinchem junction. A man was taken to hospital with serious but life-threatening injuries. A car crashed into the back of a truck in the accident.
A third person was in the car. He was unharmed, as was the driver of the truck. The deceased woman was from Romania. The identities of the other persons involved have not been released.
After the accident, several connecting roads were closed, including the loops of the A27 towards Rotterdam. They were released again around 7:15 PM.
Police say the collision may have been caused by a traffic jam. It was very busy on the Dutch roads Friday. Due to Pentecost traffic and several accidents, there was more than 825 kilometers of traffic jams around 4.30 pm. That is much more than usual on a Friday afternoon.
After 7 p.m. the biggest problems were over and by 8.15 p.m. there were hardly any traffic jams in the country.
