Digital nomads
For digital nomads, the traditional home office is no longer enough. They don’t just want to work from home, but from anywhere in the world. As the term “nomad” suggests, this group of people are people who do not want to settle down in a fixed place. Rather, they travel from region to region as often as possible to get to know foreign cultures, countries and people. This interplay of vacation and work is also called “workation”. This is exactly how digital nomads imagine their working life to be. They don’t want to spend their time in one place all the time, much less travel to a permanent office. They carry out their work completely digitally via the Internet. They therefore do not need a specific place to work. A laptop, a smartphone and a good internet connection are all you need. Of course, the job given must also meet the necessary requirements. Digital nomads are primarily programmers, web designers, online editors, online marketing specialists or management consultants.
The Digital Nomad Index
Since digital nomadism is only possible under certain conditions, those interested have to find both the right job and the right places to work. The “Digital Nomad Index” from the British telecommunications provider Circleloop helps with the latter. This lists the top 85 countries for digital nomads. The ranking results from the consideration of different criteria, such as the local broadband and mobile Internet speed as well as the costs that have to be paid for it. In addition, the country’s score in the “Global Happiness Index”, the level of rent for a one-room apartment, the allocation of working holiday visas, the proportion of migrants in the population and the search queries for digital jobs are also taken into account. The better a country fulfills the listed criteria, the higher the ranking of the “Digital Nomad Index”.
Digital nomads have it best in Canada, Great Britain and Romania
With a “Digital Nomad Score” of 74.35 points, Canada performs best in the ranking. In comparison, the country offers the optimal mix of a fast and affordable internet connection, a high level of friendliness towards migrants and a large number of digital jobs that are in demand. With a gap of almost eleven points, Great Britain is in second place behind the leader, closely followed by Romania. As a country for digital nomads, Romania is characterized above all by very fast broadband internet speeds at extremely low costs. In addition, the average monthly rent for a one-room apartment is relatively cheap at 325 euros.
With a Digital Nomad Score of a smooth 60 points, Germany made it to tenth place in the ranking. Before that are Switzerland, Australia, the Netherlands, France, Denmark and Sweden.
