Defense and the unions for defense personnel have today reached an employment conditions result for the period 2021 to 2023. It has been agreed that salary increases with a total effect of 8.5% over 3 years and a one-off payment of € 1,750 for all Defense employees. There is also a new salary structure for soldiers and the most important allowances are going up considerably. All in all, this means that employees in the lower ranks and scales can improve by more than 20%. The unions will present the result with a positive advice to their supporters.

New salary table for more salary soldiers faster

An important point is the modernization of the old Defense payroll building. When transferring to the new salary table, soldiers receive the higher salary amounts that belong to the new table. The introduction of a new military salary table ensures that soldiers earn more salary faster. This leads to a higher salary over the entire career. This creates an attractive perspective in which staying longer with the Defense organization is much better rewarded.

Not only does the perspective improve, the base also becomes firmer. The basic wage within Defense for civilians over the age of 21 and military personnel on duty will soon be € 14 per hour or more. This enables Defense to compete more effectively in the labor market. For citizens, there will be an extra salary increase for all employees up to and including scale 7.

Temporary agency allowance increased and work from home allowance

In addition to the salary increase, to do justice to operational efforts, the training allowance and the temporary employment allowance have been increased with retroactive effect. In addition, the commuting allowance has been considerably improved, and a work-from-home allowance has been introduced. The social partners have also made agreements about improving the work-life balance and new forms of appointment and contract. New placements also have a minimum placement period of 3 years with a maximum of 7 years. This makes defense a much more attractive employer.

Christophe van der Maat, State Secretary for Defence: “Concluding a new terms of employment agreement has top priority, the minister and I are therefore pleased with the result that we have now achieved. We are taking a solid step forward with this, for current and future employees.”

The unions will inform Defense on 7 July whether their members can agree to the agreements, after which a final agreement can possibly be signed.
