Real Madrid: Captain Marcelo leaves after 25 titles – future open

Real Madrid captain Marcelo has confirmed his departure from the “Royal” after beating Liverpool 1-0 in the Champions League final. “The feelings are overwhelming, this was my last game with Real Madrid but I’m very happy,” said the Brazilian.

The 34-year-old was on the bench during the final, but as captain he played a major part in the Madrilenians’ 14th “premier class” win. Late on Saturday evening he was handed the trophy, for him personally it was his fifth triumph in the Champions League and his 25th title in Real Madrid dress – no Madrilenian has celebrated a trophy more often in history.

“I made history at the best, biggest club in the world. Then the emotions came out,” said Marcelo about his tears of joy after the final whistle. “It’s over 15 years, 25 titles. I’ve won more trophies than any other player in the history of the best club in the world. I walk through the big door with my head held high.” In total, the Brazilian played 545 games for the “Royals”, with Karim Benzema (34) only one legionnaire played more often for Real.

In the weeks before, the left-back had repeatedly expressed hope of being able to extend his contract in Madrid again. He didn’t want to reveal anything about his future: “Now I’ll celebrate with my family and my teammates and then we’ll see. Now I want to enjoy it. You’ll find out soon enough.”
