Questions and answers on the Champions League final

Real Madrid and Liverpool will play the Champions League final at the Stade de France on Saturday. We answer the most important questions about the endgame.

Who shows the game?

Which Germans are there?

The whole of Liverpool relies on team manager Jürgen Klopp, who has coached the Reds since 2015 and can now win the Champions League for the second time. The club also employs goalkeeper Loris Karius, who hasn’t made a game for Liverpool since his big mistake in the 2018 final – also against Real.

Toni Kroos is the only German in the squad at Real, the Rio World Champion can win the Champions League for the fifth time.

Who is favorite?

At least at the betting shops of Liverpool FC. The provider bwin sees the Reds at odds of 2.05, so if the English win, there is “only” about twice the stake back. Opponent Real is at 3.50. A draw after 90 minutes is quoted at odds of 3.60.

What is the direct record between Real and Liverpool?

So far there have been eight duels, all in the Champions League or in the European Cup. Real won four times, including the 2018 final (3-1). Liverpool have won three times, including the 1981 final (1-0). Last season, both teams met in the quarter-finals, when Real prevailed (0:0/3:1).

Who has won the pot more often?

Real hold the record with 13 titles, beating Liverpool in 2018 being their last. Liverpool won the pot six times, most recently in 2019 with a 2-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur – in Madrid.

How did both clubs get into the final?

Liverpool won their group by a maximum of 18 points ahead of Atletico Madrid, FC Porto and AC Milan, followed by Inter Milan (2-0, 0-1), Benfica (3-1, 3-3) and Bayern-Bezwinger FC Villarreal (2: 0 / 3: 2) the disadvantage. Real prevailed in the group with 15 points ahead of Inter Milan, Sheriff Tiraspol and Shakhtar Donetsk, only losing the home game against Tiraspol. In the knockout round, Real then knocked out Paris St. Germain (0:1/3:1), Chelsea (3:1, 2:3 aet) and Manchester City (3:4/3:1 aet).

How much is the prize money?

The winner of the final receives a whopping 20 million euros – the loser can console himself with 15.5 million.

Why is St Denis played?

The 2022 final was originally supposed to take place in Munich. However, after the 2020 final was moved to Lisbon as a result of the corona pandemic, a new order was determined, so St. Petersburg was planned. As a result of the Russian attack on Ukraine, the venue changed again. French President Emmanuel Macron had vigorously promoted St. Denis.
