Jonjoe Kenny was considered one of the crowd favorites during his time at FC Schalke 04 in the 2019/2020 season and, despite being on loan, he immediately established himself as a regular. According to his own statement, he still feels connected to the club from Gelsenkirchen, which is why he is particularly happy about the promotion of his former club.
“Of course it’s great for the whole club, but also for the Bundesliga. Schalke are such a big club. They belong in the Bundesliga,” said the 24-year-old in an interview with “sports1“.
After leaving Schalke and another year on loan at Celtic FC, Kenny has been back in his hometown of Liverpool for Everton since this season, making 15 appearances this season under team manager Frank Lampard.
The full-back has still not forgotten FC Schalke 04: “My time at Schalke was great. I’ve followed the games again and again. Unfortunately, it’s not always that easy to follow the Bundesliga live in England, but I had the results always on the screen. I’m still in contact with one or the other,” said Kenny, who played a total of 31 times in the German upper house for the Royal Blues.
Kenny does not categorically rule out a Schalke return
The Englishman once again reiterated that he would not categorically rule out another move to Germany in the future: “Schalke is the only Bundesliga club I’ve played for, so of course I have a special bond there. But there are many interesting clubs in Germany , the league has a lot to offer,” said the defender meaningfully.
Since Kenny has not yet signed another contract with Everton FC for the coming season, the sporting future of the former U21 international is still uncertain. However, Kenny emphasized that he wants to clarify as quickly as possible in the coming days where he will start the new season as a professional.
