Companies in Emmen that still have old computers and ICT equipment can now sell them to people with a small budget. After a thorough check, the minima can purchase the equipment for a few tens.
The computers are collected from the companies, after which employees of the social enterprise Copiatec get to work. The items are made up-to-date for reuse. For example, the hard disks are emptied and new software is installed if necessary, says Herman Idema. He is director of the entrepreneurs’ association Ondernemend Emmen and the driving force behind the campaign.
“We assume that many companies participate. There are always one, two or perhaps five computers that otherwise go to the landfill. And if you look at the recycling center to see how much equipment is thrown away, it is about kilograms, while those devices are often still functional, so just give it to us and the stuff will get a new life.”
Idema sees that there is enough enthusiasm for the action. “I don’t know the exact numbers, but Stichting Leergeld (organization for minimum wages, ed.) makes calls more often and people use it.” In the meantime, Ukrainians have also been helped with a second-hand computer. “Then Ukrainian software will be installed,” Idema points to the success of the initiative.
