Improve call quality on iPhone with voice isolation

With iOS 15, Apple introduced a new feature that significantly improves voice quality when making calls via Teams, Skype or FaceTime. However, many users do not know it at all because it is very well hidden in the control center.

The new iPhone function is called voice isolation and improves the quality of the microphone during a call – whether it’s regular voice calls or video calls. Apple not only makes them available on its iPhones and iPads, but also on Macs and MacBooks running Monterey.

Hard to find Voice Isolation on iPhone

The problem: Voice isolation, or as it is called in this country, is pretty well hidden in the iPhone’s system and the settings can only be called up when you’re on a call. It is therefore advisable to call a friend first and make the adjustments at your leisure. Otherwise, you might find yourself on an important call while first navigating through the menu to enable voice isolation on iPhone.

Also important to know: Voice Isolation cannot be activated for normal phone calls using the iPhone’s Phone app. The mode is only found in (video) calls that are made via services such as Microsoft Teams, Skype, FaceTime, WhatsApp and similar.

If you are in such a call, proceed as follows:

A swipe down from the upper right corner (or from the bottom up on the iPhone SE) opens it control center on iPhone. On Mac, click in the top right corner. Here you will find a button with the inscription “mode‘, marked by a microphone icon. The setting is factory set to Default, but there are two other options called Voice Isolation and Wide Spectrum. Choose voice isolation (German for voice isolation).

The setting activates a kind of noise canceling for the voice. Thanks to it, the microphones in the iPhone filter out all disruptive background noise during the call. As a result, the caller’s voice can be understood even more clearly.

Voice stimulation not usable with all iPhones

Voice Isolation is part of the iOS 15 update. However, like the website tech radar reports that the function is not found on all older iPhones, even though they run the current iOS version. For example, voice isolation is not even displayed on the iPhone 7 with iOS 15. The option was also visible on an iPhone 11, but was reported as “not available”.

On newer models like the iPhone 12 or 13, however, voice isolation should work without any problems. We ourselves were able to try out the function with both an iPhone 13 and an iPhone SE. In both cases, we were pleasantly surprised by the changes in voice transmission.
