Not once, not twice, but three times the building shed of carnival association De Brassers in Veldhoven was broken into. Or, as the board of the carnival association writes on Facebook: “For the third time we have fallen victim to common thieves.” And that feels very bad: “We are distraught and transfixed.”
For Dana Bierings, who is chairman of the board of the Veldhoven carnival association, it is a complete mystery who is behind the burglaries. The big question is also: why do the burglars keep coming back? “The Monday before King’s Day, the thieves came for the first time and took batteries, grinding wheels and a scooter.”
The police advised to remove all valuables after the break-in. There is really not much left to do now. Yet the thieves keep coming back.
Chocolates and toilet paper
After the third burglary, the thieves placed a pallet on the floor with toilet paper, a coffee machine and chocolates on it. According to Dana Bierings, it resembles a kind of message of: we will be back.
The thieves kept coming in through the back. They also climbed on a container and kicked in a door. Although they are untidy and left behind flashlights and crowbars, they have left insufficient traces for the police.
Meanwhile, the frustration is great at the carnival association. “After two years of corona, we finally want to participate normally again in the parade and celebrate carnival. We just had everything ready. A new construction location and then you get this, that cuts in.”
The members were so angry that it was even proposed to all go to sleep in the shed, but in the end they decided against it. Because, as Dana says: “What good does that do you?”
The board will discuss the burglaries on Tuesday evening. There may be camera surveillance in the construction hut to deter the thieves guild.
