The cabinet is making an extra 40 million euros available for tackling organized crime in the region. In the province, about one to three in five farmers are approached by criminals.

The money is intended for, among other things, the fight against international drug crime in pleasure ports and sea ports. It should also help farmers to resist criminals. It is not known how much money will be released for the (border) region in Limburg.

Distribution
In any case, 10 million euros will go to Regional Information and Expertise Centers (RIECs) and the National Information and Expertise Center (LIEC). With the remaining 30 million, cooperation, knowledge sharing and implementation in the region should be strengthened.

Crime
“Criminals take advantage of the situation they are given. They nest in our residential areas, businesses and outlying areas to carry out their illegal practices if we are not careful. In the region we tackle crime at the source and break through the structures before complete criminal networks can arise,” said Justice and Security Minister Dilan Yesilgöz.

LLTB
The Limburgse Land- en Tuinbouwbond (LLTB) reported in 2020 based on signals from the police and the judiciary that in the south of the Netherlands, and especially in the border regions, one to three in five farmers are approached by criminals. Criminals use empty stables to produce synthetic drugs or grow cannabis.
