The blue sky on the beach of Callantsoog was brightened up today by countless kites. During the Kite Festival, specimens in the form of teddy bears, octopuses and fish went into the air.
“When you walk under it, you think ‘jew, how gigantic'”, Marc Bergman says enthusiastically. Marc is the organizer of the Kite Festival and proud owner of a large orange teddy bear. “I’ve owned a kite shop for years and that’s why I started this.”
A group of brown octopuses attracts a lot of attention. “There are now a couple of twenty meters and one of 35 meters,” says Stephen of Holland Kite Team. Due to the play of the wind, these large octopuses seem to be alive. “We also have one of 65 meters. Unfortunately, that kite could not fly this weekend. The wide beach of Callantsoog is too small,” said Stephen.
“It can come in all shapes and sizes. Everything goes up in the air!”
The kites seem to float by themselves. But these floating giants hang in the wind. “It’s kind of a love-hate relationship between the wind and the kite-flyers,” says a man who had to fish his kite out of the sea.
The Holland Kite Team octopuses also started to sink a bit, but after a change in the wind direction they flew proudly above the beach again. “Actually, we have perfect weather!”, says organizer Marc. “People can enjoy the sun and we are very happy that the kites are hanging nicely!”
The event attracted many Dutch people, but people from Belgium and Germany also took part.
