Mainz 05 have found a replacement for Jeremiah St. Juste who is moving to Sporting Lisbon. The Bundesliga club officially announced the transfer of Maxim Leitsch on Friday. He signed a contract with FSV until 2026. No information was given in the club’s announcements about the fee, but several media had previously reported on a release clause of 3 million euros, which according to “Picture” has now been drawn.
“We decided on Maxim early on when planning the squad and we’re happy that we were able to win him for Mainz 05. He’s a great fit for us, both in the way he plays football and the way he’s off the pitch as a guy. It is also an emotional step for Maxim to leave his familiar environment in order to find his second sporting home here,” said Martin Schmidt, sports director of Mainz 05.

For Leitsch, who switched to the Bochum youth team in 2008, it is the first change in the professional field. The 24-year-old central defender played 19 games for VfL last season and doubled his market value from EUR 2.5 million to EUR 5 million in the last update. Only four times has the club received a higher sum than the 3 million euros that Mainz pays with a sale.
“I was at my home club Bochum for many years and I’m incredibly grateful for everything I was able to learn and take with me at VfL. Nevertheless, I think that a change of scenery is the right step for my development. After many good conversations, I would like to go to Mainz 05. I was made to feel absolutely wanted here. All in all I’ve only heard good things about Mainz 05, the club seems very warm and friendly. Everything fits for me here, so I’m looking forward to the new challenge and my new teammates – I already know Anton Stach, Jonathan Burkardt and Finn Dahmen from the U21 national team,” said Leitsch about his move.
