Klaus Theweleit is also a fan of SC Freiburg. The writer and cultural theorist has been teaching and living in Breisgau since 1966. “I hope the series last”, he says to the sports show. Christian Streich has won the cup finals in Berlin three times with the SC Freiburg U19s, Leipzig lost to FC Bayern (2019) and Borussia Dortmund (2021).
Freiburg as an alternative to RB Leipzig
The long-discontinued football magazine “Rund” conducted a long interview with Theweleit in 2006 on the occasion of the World Cup in Germany, in which he was also asked about the attitude of Germans towards their own nation. “The people who, out of some principle, always say that Germany should just lose are strange,” said Theweleit. Football should be viewed for football’s sake, it shouldn’t be overloaded.
Are fans who always want to see Leipzig lose, who see their happiness in the defeats of others, also strange? Should only victories of your own team be satisfactory? “There can be both. I know a lot of people who are happy about FC Bayern’s defeats,” says Theweleit, who calls his relationship with RB “split”: “In any case, I don’t reject them in principle.”
Wide over Freiburg: “Very quiet environment”
SC Freiburg, the club of Theweleit and Breit, is something of an alternative to RB Leipzig. Hardly anyone dislikes the sports club, most find it likeable and refreshingly different. Why is that?
“We have a very calm environment. There is no immediate hype about something here. We don’t have a tabloid here either, you might have to say that‘ Helen Breit replies. “Sustainable Management” may be “like the DNA of the club”almost one “unique selling point”. In addition one comes “basic value orientation.”
The title at SC would probably not change anything
Klaus Theweleit emphasizes the cooperation of those responsible: “There is a collegiality, no competition.” Most clubs have “dominant figures”, SC Freiburg have none. Coach Christian Streich is not one because he always emphasizes the community effort and acts accordingly.
Helen Breit would consider a cup victory “brilliant reward” for the organic growth of their club. The title would probably not change anything: “I think everything would go on like this.”
